What is a Power of Attorney (Wakaalad)?

A Power of Attorney (known as Wakaalad in Somali) is a legal document that authorizes one person (the agent or attorney-in-fact) to act on behalf of another person (the principal) in legal, financial, or personal matters. The Embassy can authenticate and notarize Powers of Attorney for Somali nationals residing in Switzerland and Austria.

Common Uses

Property Transactions

Authorize a representative in Somalia to buy, sell, or manage property on your behalf.

Legal Proceedings

Appoint someone to represent you in legal matters, court proceedings, or official government dealings.

Financial Affairs

Grant authority to manage bank accounts, receive payments, or handle financial transactions in Somalia.

Family Matters

Authorize a family member or trusted person to handle family or personal affairs on your behalf.

Required Documents

  • Valid Somali passport or national ID
  • Completed Power of Attorney form (template available at the Embassy)
  • Full name and identification details of the person being appointed
  • Clear description of the powers being granted
  • Two passport-size photographs

Procedure

To have a Power of Attorney notarized by the Embassy, please book an appointment in advance. During your appointment, you will be required to sign the document in the presence of a consular officer. The Embassy will then authenticate the document with an official stamp and signature.

Processing time is typically 1–3 working days. An additional fee applies for notarization services.
